 NUMBERING: proper spacing, contrasting color, minimum 3-inch block letters

 REGISTRATION/DOCUMENTATION: papers must be onboard

 NAVIGATION LIGHTS: must operate and show proper configuration

 SOUND-PRODUCING DEVICE: horn, whistle or other device

 BELL: boats  39.5 feet/12m or longer.

 PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE (PFD): one wearable for each passenger, minimum - two. Boats 16 feet and longer must have one type IV onboard.

 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: mounted, minimum for size and type of boat, halon/FE 241/CO2/- current inspection tag.

 VISUAL DISTRESS SIGNALS:  minimum three-day use and three-night use pyrotechnic devices for boats over 16 feet.  Signal flag and light.  Make sure signal flares are not expired.

 VENTILATION: for closed compartments with potential for explosive vapors and an ignition source.  Installed blower must work.  Warning posted.

 BACK FLAME ARRESTED: approved type, tight installation, clean (required only on gas-powered boats).

 FUEL SYSTEM: tanks secure, over seven gallons are considered permanent and must be grounded/vented. Hoses in good condition, no leaks.

 ANCHOR AND ANCHOR LINE: suitable for the boat and the boating area.

 ALTERNATE PROPULSION: boats under 16 feet--paddle, oar, etc.

 DEWATERING DEVICE: pumps must work, extra manual bailer.

 OVERALL VESSEL CONDITION: bilge and equipment area clean, well-maintained. Not overloaded, overpowered, or no automotive parts.

 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: batteries secure, terminals covered, well-organized wiring, proper fuses/circuit breakers.

 GALLEY/HEATING SYSTEM: secure system, proper tank installation. No flammable materials nearby.

 MARINE SANITATION DEVICE: approved device, overboard discharge sealed.

 MARPOL TRASH PLACARD: boats 26 feet and longer, written plan for boats 40 feet and longer.

 POLLUTION PLACARD: boats 26 feet and longer, with engine room.

 NAVIGATION RULES: boats 39.4 feet/12m and longer
