Knots & How to tie them

There are thousands of knots each with specific applications, However for all practical boating instances these are the big three all purpose knot you ought to know

The Bowline

The Bowline Knot - The king Of  Knots" is one of the most used loop knots. This variant is most used in the world, due to its simplicity & security. Keep the cross point between a finger and thumb and make a clock-wise turn with your wrist. Without the loop in between, it is the same knot. For safety's sake - There is a rule of thumb which states that the loose end should be as long as 12 times the circumference especially for heavy loads.

 The Reef Knot or Square Knot General
 

 

The reef or square knot - is only useful for simple applications. Very easy to tie & does not jam, and so unties with little effort. Most Sailor used it for binding rolled sails or as its name sake implies - reefed sails. 
 

The Eight Knot

The Eight or Flemish Is mainly a line stopper. It is difficult untie and so is reserved for more permanent application.
