Paint Types & Longevity
1.) copolymer paints
-partially soluble-coating wears down like soap
-more constant copper release
- for boats that travel at less 15 knots
-extremely fragile
-yards tend to push (empowers them to be More responsible for the boat's maintenance)
-ecologically more destructive for its effectiveness
-Many Claim it will eventually be taken off market
-is destroyed by power washing
-cannot be hauled out for long periods, 48hrs at the very most
2 hard anti-fouling
-resistant to light abrasion-rubbing or light abrasion reduces friction, wet sanding or burnishing reduces drag
-stronger in 3rd season than ablatives
-more susceptible to Water Line buildup- but easier to clean
-less susceptible to staining
*NEVER USE GRILL PADS, specifically on this paint, even white “ light pads” are destructive
*OLD PAINT MUST BE REMOVED OR ROUGH SANDED
-can be hauled out for lengthy durations without ruining paint's effectiveness.
II Secrets of longevity
Some of this is not all that feasible but ideally -
-Triple paint Water Line, Keel, Rudder, Keel Hull connection and around all metal, especially running gear-stay away from stagnant bulkheads
-away from 2 + Knott current, T heads
-rotate Boat monthly if slip has a single finger pier to alternate sunlight
-Diver should use brushes NEVER pads -unless in the paint's final stages
-Move away from large vessels that are never cleaned
-barnacles begat barnacles
- Power cords in water, boats that burn zinc can also burn copper in paint
- Don’t allow silt to build up past 1 ft down. Slime algae can grow on virtually new paint and barnacles grow on slime
- Use better paint. The cost for the duration is worth it.
